The Institute of Atomic and Molecular Physics of Jilin University is a natural science research institution approved by the Ministry of Education in 1979. In 1998, it became the first batch of first-level physics doctoral degree-granting units, existing two national key disciplines : atomic and molecular physics and condensed matter physics,  which are "211 Project" and "985 Project" key construction disciplines. Among them, the Department of Condensed Matter Physics established the State Key Laboratory of Superhard Materials with the approval of the State Planning Commission in 1995. The Department of Atomic and Molecular Physics established the Jilin Province Key Laboratory of Applied Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy in May 2013. From the beginning of the establishment of the institute, under the leadership of professor Gou Qingquan and other old generations of scientists, it was determined to study the structure, performance and change laws of matter under high temperature and high pressure, the state structure and movement laws of atoms and molecules under extreme conditions, and the laws of high temperature and pressure. The research direction focusing on new material synthesis has become my country's main scientific research and talent training base in related fields after over 30 years of development.

The institute currently has 33 faculty members. Among them, there are 14 professors, 12 associate professors , and 7 lecturers . Many people have been rated as outstanding communist party member, advanced individuals in teacher ethics, and advanced individuals in "Three Education" For many years, the institute has been involved in atomic and molecular structure and spectroscopy, atomic and molecular excited state dynamics, atomic and molecular collision physics, and atomic and molecular physics intersection research, material pressure-induced phase transition and high-pressure in-situ physical property measurement, material structure and phase transition theory under ultra-high pressure computing, new superhard materials and superhard film materials, nanomaterials and high-tech applications, and got a batch of high level research achievements. At present, the institute presides over and undertakes scientific research projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China's major scientific research instruments and equipment, the National Major Scientific Research Plan (973) project, the National Natural Science Foundation of China's major research plans and key projects, and the national major special tasks. We are the First-class research institutes in the world, and established long-term cooperative research relationships Hong Kong(China) ,Taiwan(China) and over 10 countries.  Among the graduates, there are hundreds people including winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, New Century Talents, Tang Aoqing Distinguished Professor, Tang Aoqing Chair Professor, Directors of State Key Laboratories and Provincial and Ministerial Key Laboratories, Programs, and Doctoral Tutors.
